Markham malls: What’s up at King Square?

The news has been floating around since about 2010. As if Pacific Mall wasn’t big enough, a larger Asian mall called King Square  will soon be the largest of all in North America. The Markham mall will be approximately one million square feet. Construction of phase 1 at Woodbine Avenue and Markland Street is expected to be complete in fall 2013.

The 12-acre plan calls for over 1,000 retailers, a convention centre, banquet hall, underground parking, offices and a rooftop garden. Three condo buildings are also in the works. The company behind King Square, Global Link Realty Group Inc., hopes to complete construction by fall 2012. Overall, this mixed-use development will make Pacific Mall at Kennedy and Steeles look tiny.

Though the mall is in its preliminary stages, Brampton-based Varcon Construction has started work on the estimated $86 million phase 1 of King Square.
